Instructor of Harp

Janet Harriman attended the Cleveland Institute of Music where she earned her Master of Music degree, studying with the distinguished harpist and teacher, Alice Chalifoux, and earned her Bachelor of Music degree (Piano performance) from the College of Wooster in her home state of Ohio. Ms. Harriman began her harp studies at age 15, under the tutelage of her mother, who was a professional harpist in Columbus, OH. With her mother’s encouragement, Janet spent the next thirteen summers of dedicated study with Miss Chalifoux at the Salzedo Harp Colony in Camden, Maine.

Harriman is an alumni of the National Repertory Orchestra in Keystone, CO and has appeared as a guest harpist with NRO on several occasions. In 1988, Janet was invited to join The New World Symphony (Miami Beach, FL) at the start of its inaugural season. Ms. Harriman performed, recorded and toured with the New World Symphony for four years under artistic director Michael Tilson Thomas. Ms. Harriman was honored to receive The New World Symphony’s Community Board Award in recognition that her musicianship demonstrates “leadership and fellowship with a commitment to continuing artistic development.”

After relocating to Colorado in 1993, Harriman established herself as a free-lance harpist in both classical and popular music settings. She frequently performs for touring shows at the Buell Theater in Denver, as well as numerous solo and chamber music ensemble recitals in Denver and the western slope areas. Harriman was acting principal harpist with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and has also worked with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, as a guest harpist.

Janet Harriman currently serves as the Principal Harpist with the Central City Opera Festival, a position she has held since 1993. She enjoys biking and skiing. Ms. Harriman resides in Dillon, CO with her husband and two daughters.
