CU Opera
The CU Opera program has been designated a “Program of Excellence” by the Colorado Commission on Higher Education. Students from the CU Opera program took home First Place in the National Opera Association’s Opera Scenes contest in both 2010 and 2011. Undergraduate and graduate students at the College present several major productions each year. These include fully staged and costumed operas, operettas, and musicals, such as Carousel, La Traviata, Our Town, and Le nozze di Figaro. Other performance opportunities for students include an Opera Scenes program each semester. The CU Opera Director is Leigh Holman, and the CU Opera Conductor is Nicholas Carthy.
In Summer 2010, CU Opera began the CU New Opera Works program (CU NOW). CU NOW puts the College of Music at the beginning of the pipeline of American operatic creation. Each public workshop performance features sections of brand-new operatic works, with composers’ and librettists’ live commentary, performed by opera program students under the direction of CU Opera Director Leigh Holman. The program’s events also include talkbacks moderated by Professor of Voice Patrick Mason, and recitals by faculty and other guest artists. In Summer 2012, the featured composer was Lori Laitman, working with Colorado’s poet laureate David Mason as librettist, on an operatic version of Mason’s verse novel Ludlow. In the summer of 2013, CU NOW will present Libby Larsen’s A Wrinkle in Time June 14-16th in the Atlas Black Box Theatre. This opera is based on the award winning novel by Madeleine L’Engle titled A Wrinkle in Time.
