Assistant Professor of Voice
Research into the Terezin Concentration Camp, specifically focusing on the composer Viktor Ullmann and Terezin’s influence on his vocal compositions. Performances of Ullmann’s opera Der Kaiser von Atlantis and his songs in Boulder, New York and Germany.

Professor of Piano
Performed and taught in Ghana in March 2011. Performance with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ghana, at the University of Ghana Legon and at the U.S. Ambassador’s Residence in Accra. Performances included pieces by Ghanian composer Kwabene Nketia.
Classical piano teaching in Mexico: musical, social and cultural perspectives (Sabbatical leave, spring 2011).
Associate Professor of Piano Pedagogy
The goal of this project was to study the teaching of classical piano in Mexico, taking into account the cultural and social contexts, and the daily reality of the piano teachers, students and their families. The premise of this project is that the social and cultural contexts have an influence on the way music is taught and learned, and on the cultural meaning of music pedagogy and performance in different parts of the globe.

Students and Diversity
“I feel like I belong here”: A Case Study of an Urban Student Teacher
Stephanie Prichard, doctoral student in Music Education
The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of a music student teacher with an urban background, who elected to teach in an urban high school. The student teacher–a first generation Vietnamese-American–experienced a certain degree of comfort or familiarity within the diverse, urban high school setting, based on his own background experiences. Findings included the emergence of habitus (Bourdieu, 1986), or worldview, as the primary influence on the participant’s decision to pursue an urban student teaching placement.

Diverse Musicians Alliance
The Diverse Musicians’ Alliance is a student group established in 2004. Housed in the College of Music, the Diverse Musicians’ Alliance serves as an academic neighborhood dedicated to student mentorship, student retention, and academic achievement. Musically, the group focuses on the performance of music that reflect the diverse backgrounds of students at the University of Colorado and the College of Music. Visit the DMA webpage

Study abroad is one of the most challenging and rewarding adventures students experience. On their return, students have a better understanding of the world, of the United States and of themselves. Music majors at the University of Colorado Boulder have the option to study abroad for a semester or summer term. The College of Music has worked closely with the Study Abroad Office to identify programs that offer music courses, ensembles, and/or applied lessons for music majors. We have developed a Study Abroad guide for music majors with information about these options, including (but not limited to) programs in England, Australia, Amsterdam, Vienna, Milan, and South Africa.
