Current graduate tuition is $496 per graduate credit-hour (plus student fees) and can be applied toward a graduate degree. CEU is $125 per a 1 credit intensive. Psychology of Music Teaching and Learning

Course Description:  This course is designed to examine cognitive, behaviorist, and humanist psychology as related to music learning. Other topics include physiology of the brain and ear, psychoacoustics, creative thinking in music, expert and expressive performance, self-regulation/motivation theory, and performance anxiety. A majority of class sessions will involve group discussion of assigned readings and practical application of concepts through hands-on activities and weekly assignments.

Course Description: This course is designed to prepare graduate students for their experiences in the intensive Minds on Music: Composition for Everyone! (IMUS 5093). Students will examine the literature on composition experiences, and explore developmental considerations that allow these experiences to be meaningful for students in K-8 music classrooms. Workshop Description: Making one’s own music is one of the most powerful experiences students have as young musicians.  In this workshop we will address how to engage PreK-12 students in compositional learning in general music and ensemble settings.  We will explore the role of notation, instruments, technology, and our own humanity in crafting sounds into music.  We will also examine rationales for including composition in school music programs, consider what we know from research on children’s compositional process and products, and design projects that can be used in your classroom which encompass all that composition has to offer our students. Students are encouraged to also register for MUSC 6193 – Advanced Studies in School Composition Experiences being offered June 2-June 3. Please bring your instrument, laptop, and IPhone/Droid to class!

Workshop Description: Are you currently teaching strings/orchestra yet consider yourself a general, choral or band specialist? Are you a string instrument specialist who would like to hone your ability to demonstrate on all string instruments? This intensive is designed to meet the needs of both groups of teachers by introducing students to fundamental and unique aspects of string instrument (violin, viola, cello and bass) performance technique and pedagogy. In addition to hands-on experience playing orchestral string instruments, participants will also explore resources, methods, and strategies that assist in teaching string instruments at both elementary and secondary levels. Please bring your string instrument(s) to class!

Workshop Description: This three day intensive for secondary instrumental music teachers will focus on large ensemble rehearsal strategies, conducting techniques, and literature. All participants will observe CU Middle School Summer Band rehearsals run by a nationally known guest clinician and engage in seminar discussions led by the instructor and guest clinician.
