Rehearsal/Performance Policy

  1. Students must be in attendance and on time at all rehearsals and performances.  If sickness or an emergency situation requires that the student be absent from a rehearsal, the student must arrange for a substitute. It is the student’s responsibility to notify the instructor in advance and get the music to the substitute. (It is also the responsibility of the student to get his/her music back from the substitute for the next rehearsal.) Failure to provide the substitute with the music for rehearsal, or failure to get the music back for the next rehearsal may result in the lowering of the student’s final grade.  If the student cannot reach the instructor, they should call the jazz studies office, 492-8810 and leave a message. An unexcused absence will result in the lowering of the student’s grade. Students with three unexcused absences will be immediately dropped from the class and assigned an “F” for the semester. Only the instructor may determine what constitutes an “excused absence”. Repeated tardiness will result in a lowering of the student’s final grade.
  1. Each major performance of the jazz band may have up to three sectional rehearsals prior to a concert.  In return for this mandatory rehearsal time outside of regular class meeting time, the students are given a minimum of equal compensatory time off, usually at the end of the semester. Once sectional times and dates have been agreed upon, they are mandatory. For each sectional missed, a letter grade of one-half will be deducted from the student’s final grade.

NOTE: No substitutes are allowed for sectional rehearsals.

For each sectional missed, one letter grade WILL be dropped.

Tardiness at sectionals will result in a lowering of the student’s final grade.

  1. Performances scheduled after the semester begins will be mandatory for the student if no objection is raised at the time of the query.  Any student who misses a performance without permission in advance from the instructor will be immediately dropped from the class and assigned an “F” for the semester.
  1. No food or drink (except water) are allowed during the rehearsal.
  1. Cell phones and pagers are to be turned off and not used during rehearsals and performances.
  1. Any music handed out to students during the semester is the sole responsibility of that student. Failure to return any music to the jazz department that was handed out during the year will require the student to pay for replacement of the missing music. When music is no longer available from the publisher, student will submit a complete part transcribed from the score utilizing a music notation program (Finale, Sibelius, etc.) NO EXCEPTIONS!
  1. Final grades will be based on attendance, tardiness, effort towards preparation of music outside of class, and conduct in rehearsals.
  1. Students are expected to act responsibly and professionally at all rehearsals and performances. Concert attire is semi-formal; ties/coats for men. No tennis shoes, jeans, or hats. At NO TIME are students permitted to drink alcohol at a jazz rehearsal or performance.

me a letter from Disability Services in a timely manner so that your needs may be addressed.  Disability Services determines accommodations based on documented disabilities.  Contact: 303-492-8671, Willard 322, and

Religious Observances

Campus policy regarding religious observances requires that faculty make every effort to reasonably and fairly deal with all students who, because of

religious obligations, have conflicts with scheduled exams, assignments or

required attendance. See full details at http://www.colorado.edu/policies/fac_relig.html

Behavior Policy

Students and faculty each have responsibility for maintaining an appropriate

learning environment. Those who fail to adhere to such behavioral standards may be subject to discipline. Professional courtesy and sensitivity are especially important with respect to individuals and topics dealing with differences of race, culture, religion, politics, sexual orientation, gender, gender variance, and nationalities.  Class rosters are provided to the instructor with the student’s legal name. I will gladly honor your request to address you by an alternate name or gender pronoun. Please advise me of this preference early in the semester so that I may make appropriate changes to my records.  See polices at

http://www.colorado.edu/policies/classbehavior.html and at

Discrimination and Harassment

The University of Colorado Boulder policy on Discrimination and Harassment, the University of Colorado policy on Sexual Harassment and the University of Colorado policy on Amorous Relationships apply to all students, staff and faculty.  Any student, staff or faculty member who believes s/he has been the subject of discrimination or harassment based upon race, color, national origin, sex, age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, or veteran status should contact the Office of Discrimination and Harassment (ODH) at 303-492-2127 or the Office of Judicial Affairs at 303-492-5550.  Information about the ODH, the above referenced policies and the campus resources available to assist individuals regarding discrimination or harassment can be obtained at http://www.colorado.edu/odh
