This is the official repository for the legacy and property of Alton Glenn Miller (1904-1944), Doctor of Humane Letters, Distinguished Alumnus Honorare, and his wife Helen Dorothy Burger Miller, Alumna, The University of Colorado Boulder.
Glenn Miller Archive at CU-Boulder
The GMA includes many thousands of recordings by Glenn Miller and his Orchestra, the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band and all of the popular musicians, singers and bands of the “Big Band Era” of American Popular Music (circa 1920-1960). The archive holds the Miller private papers, business documents and contracts, radio scripts, musical instruments, sheet music, photographs, music, radio and film magazines, United States Army Air Force and Royal Air Force documents, family memorabilia and awards, including the first “Gold Record”, which was given to Glenn Miller by RCA on his “Chesterfield Moonlight Serenade” program over CBS on February 10, 1942 for his million-selling tune “Chattanooga Choo Choo”. The GMA encompasses many special collections assembled from the family of Glenn and Helen Miller, their famous associates and colleagues in the music, broadcasting and film industries, as well as recording industry producers and private collectors from around the globe. The archive is a leading and living global resource for scholars, researchers, collectors, the general public and all those who enjoy and treasure a very special moment in American musical history.
Mission
The mission of the GMA is to preserve the history of Glenn Miller and the “Big Band Era” of American Popular Music. The GMA is accomplishing its mission by building a world-class center for education and entertainment that is funded and operated by a special, dynamic academic, private sector and professional partnership. The GMA works to make the history of Glenn Miller and his era more accessibile to scholars and available to the public.
Glenn Miller Archive Team
Our knowledgable archive team presents the story of Glenn Miller and the Big Bands through personal appearances, presentations, broadcasts, the internet and published research reports. We work closely with associates worldwide toward preservation and accurate documentation, and benefit from important affiliations with universities, government agencies in the United States and the United Kingdom as well as key relationships within the entertainment industry. With our colleagues at KEZW Studio 1430, Denver (an Entercom Communications station) the GMA broadcasts regionally and worldwide via the internet weekly and on special programs. The GMA presents historic audio selections and narratives every Saturday at 6:00 p.m. MST (GMT -7) with our “Star Spangled Radio Hour” program.
