What scholarships do you offer?

College of Music scholarships are awarded to music majors only. Students are automatically considered for a merit-based music scholarship upon completion of the application process, including the audition. No additional application is necessary. To be assured of full consideration for these awards, the audition evaluation process should be completed by February 19. Students will be informed of their admissions status by mail as soon as possible after their audition. Scholarship decisions, in most cases, are made early in March and scholarship contracts are announced in a letter mailed later in the month. Once formally admitted, students are advised to pay their confirmation deposit and to make a residence hall request at their earliest opportunity, but no later than May 1 to guarantee space availability.

There are other non-music scholarships available through the university. The deadline for most of the scholarships is March 1. Students must be admitted to the university by this date in order to be eligible for these scholarships. For more detailed information on these non-music scholarships, please visit http://www.colorado.edu/finaid/scholarships.html.

Students seeking admission into music programs in higher education are encouraged to prepare themselves by spending time developing their theory, ear training, and basic keyboard skills. Our faculty recommends the following materials for students wishing to prepare for classes in theory and ear training: the self-study textbook Scales, Intervals, Keys, Triads, Rhythm, and Meter by John Clough and Joyce Conley {Norton Publishing, ISBN 0-393-95189-8} is recommended as is Practical Theory Complete by Sandy Feldstein [published by Alfred Music] to prepare for entrance tests in theory. The College of Music uses the book Tonal Harmony; with and Introduction to Twentieth-Century Music by Stefan Kostka and Dorothy Payne [published by McGraw-Hill ISBN 0-07—035874-5] in its four semesters of theory classes. Prospective students are also encouraged to take Advanced Placement tests in music theory and ear training before entering the college.
